Effectively Managing Disruptive Conduct in Learning Spaces

The strategies and resources in this workshop will help you prepare for these moments before they occur (no matter the course modality). Our discussion will be guided by the ISU Effectively Managing Disruptive Conduct in Learning Spaces (PDF) to explore course syllabi language, resources, and possible interventions in and out of the learning environment.

Facilitated by Dr. Laura Bestler, CELT

Resources for Success (Teaching Tip)

Students and an instructor in a lecture hall using Top Hat

We’re preparing to welcome everyone back to campus. This fall semester brings many back to the Iowa State University campus. There is a lot to prepare for as we all get ready for an academic year in-person and we’re here to help.

These CELT resources can help your semester start off smoothly:

  • Start of Semester Checklist: The how-to with pictures of preparing your Canvas course: The Start of Semester Checklist
  • Quick Start Guide – Updated: This updated guide contains strategies to help you prioritize and communicate with your students this fall: Quick Start Guide
  • AY 2021-22 Recommended Statements: Three new statements have been added to the list of recommended statements of inclusion for syllabi. Review CELT’s Required and Recommended ISU Syllabus Statements page and the message from the provost’s office for more information.
  • Prepare for CELT Programming: Make sure you have the time blocked off for all of the CELT programming you’re interested in. August and September events are listed below but you can check out our website for more information.

It’s OK to Not Be OK

Last week, all faculty and academic advisors received a message about the complexity and intensity of student mental health needs. The following message was shared with students and includes a link to resources. Please consider sharing this information with your students.

Feeling stressed, overwhelmed or anxious? With the pandemic, midterms, and everyday life stressors, your feelings are valid and it’s OK to feel this way. There are campus resources available for mental health, wellbeing, and academic support. You can find more information about services and resources here.

Submit course materials now for summer and fall (ISU Book Store)

It’s important for instructors to submit summer and fall semester course material requirements to the ISU Book Store now, giving bookstore staff as much time as possible to overcome any issues with sourcing or shipping. Materials — which could include textbooks, courseware, eBooks, course packets, manuals, open educational resources, or subscriptions — will be listed for the course on AccessPlus. Instructors should submit selections to their department coordinator as soon as possible. Contact Carl Arbuckle, course materials buyer (carabuc@iastate.edu, 294-0236), or John Wierson, digital course materials buyer (jwwiers@iastate.edu, 294-3501), with questions.
