IRB and SoTL: What You Need to Know

SoTL research involves doing research with human subjects, which requires oversight from the university’s Institutional Review Board (IRB). Join fellow participants as we explore the IRB application procedure and follow-through.

Featured Presenter: Raeann Ritland, IRB Post-Approval Monitor (PAM), Office of Research Ethics

Raeann conducts post-approval monitoring primarily for the IRB to document compliance with committee-approved protocols and the regulations; she may also conduct post-approval monitoring for the IACUC. Raeann assists investigators in performing compliance self-monitoring and provides research compliance education and training opportunities for investigators conducting research that involves human or animal subjects.

Designing SoTL Research: Idea to Data

This session prepares participants to design a SoTL project from idea to data collection. We will cover varying questions, methods, assessments, and data types that you can use to engage in SoTL research.

Featured Presenter: Ann Gansemer-Topf, Professor, School of Education

Ann’s 20 years of research and practice have made direct impacts on practice and policy in higher education. Her research interests focus on examining the micro (student) and macro (institutional, state, federal) factors that impact student success, including through SoTL research. She has done research on undermatched students, military-connected students, students in STEM, and examined the influence of selectivity, expenditures, and institutional types on student success. She also has expertise in assessment working in Institutional Research and as Associate Director of Research in Admissions and contributed her expertise through book chapters, grants, and teaching.

SoTL: Benefits & Beginnings

SoTL: Benefits & Beginnings

Let’s start at the very beginning. What is SoTL? Who benefits with SoTL research, and what are those benefits? This session provides the foundational knowledge necessary to embark on a SoTL journey and how it differs from scholarly teaching and disciplinary research. We will also discuss SoTL’s significance at Iowa State.

Featured Presenter: Sara Marcketti, Assistant Provost & Executive Director for the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT), Morrill Professor in the Apparel, Events, and Hospitality Management Department (AEHM)

A recipient of numerous teaching awards, Marcketti provides leadership for CELT in meeting its mission to support, promote, and enhance teaching effectiveness and student learning at Iowa State. Previously, Marcketti served as CELT Director and Associate Director of Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL).

Webinar, Turning your Scholarly Teaching into Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL)

Scholarly teaching focuses on student learning and is grounded in the subject matter taught and in implementing effective pedagogies. The scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) involves framing and systematically investigating a research question related to student learning. The research methods often include qualitative and quantitative data collection and direct and indirect measures.

Upon completion of the workshop, participants will have: 1) identified and developed a researchable question, 2) developed a framework for data collection, and 3) completed a project timeline, including milestones.

This CELT webinar is presented by Cindy Haynes, Horticulture Professor and CELT Faculty Fellow, Sara Marcketti, Morrill Professor in Apparel, Events & Hospitality Management, and Assistant Provost, Executive Director, CELT.

If you are a person with a disability, please get in touch with CELT at 515-294-5357 or email celt@iastate.edu to request reasonable accommodations to allow participation in this event.

Watch for info about Teaching and Learning Academy, Teaching Partners Program, and SoTL Scholars!

We will be sharing the 2021-2022 information for the following programs in the upcoming weeks:
  • SoTL Scholars is a year-long program that provides a framework and mentorship to help a faculty member (term, tenure-track, tenure) complete a scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) research project.
  • Teaching and Learning Academy is a year-long program that addresses course design, evidence-based teaching strategies, inclusive classroom practices, peer-review of teaching, and documentation of teaching effectiveness. Local experts on college teaching and learning will lead sessions during the academy. Instructors from all disciplines are encouraged to apply for this cohort-based teaching and learning community.
  • Teaching Partners Program matches two or three second- or third-year tenure-track faculty or term faculty with a senior faculty member (a successful, experienced teacher) from another discipline.

These programs are led by CELT Faculty Fellows and provide important professional development opportunities related to teaching and the scholarship of teaching and learning. Add a line on your curriculum vita, new knowledge, and new connections!

Framing How You Think About Your Teaching

A recent article published by Kern, et al. (2015) provides insightful consideration of the role the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) plays in the academy. The authors state the goal of the paper is “to present a model to assist both faculty and administrators with appropriately positioning SoTL’s role within the academic missions of universities.” As part of their research the authors conceptualized teaching related activities using two dimensions resulting in four quadrants. These quadrants include: “the practice of teaching, sharing about teaching, scholarly teaching, and scholarship of teaching and learning”. The quadrants combine to create the DART Matrix and each quadrant includes an array of activities and outputs that relate to the quadrant title. I found that the concept and the matrix itself helped me re-frame how I think about my teaching. The article reference is below, and I think it is well worth the time to read.

On November 3rd, Sara Marcketti Professor and CELT Associate Director for SoTL, is leading a session on the DART Matrix. In this session, she will guide participants through a reflective exercise to consider the teaching activities they are currently engaged in and how they may further develop their teaching or SoTL practice in the future. Additionally, she will describe how faculty might use the DART matrix to document their teaching. To participate visit Documenting Your Teaching using the DART Matrix website.

We hope to see you there.
