Introduction to Top Hat

In an interactive session, rotate through 4 focused stations to experience a day in the life of a professor and student on Top Hat. Choose as many or as few of the stations as you’d like! By the end of the session, you will have insight into a variety of time-saving assessment options that enable discussion and empower student agency. This introduction will help you learn how Top Hat can be used to engage students before, during and after class.

Facilitated by Gretchen Anderson and Misty Zimmerman (CELT Instructional Technology Specialists)

Workshop, Off-the-Shelf to Off-the-Cuff: Designing and Using Games for Humanistic Pedagogy

Gameplay creates a more creative, embodied experience that transports participants into unfamiliar places and times. Used well in the classroom, games can lead to more deeply engaged students and more successful learning outcomes. Focusing on historically inspired games, this workshop will help you adapt gameplay for your classroom goals.

Evan Torner is Associate Professor of German and Film & Media Studies at the University of Cincinnati, where he also serves as Director of the UC Game Lab. He co-runs several different organs in the gaming space, including the journals Analog Game Studies and the International Journal of Role-Play, as well as the Golden Cobra Challenge and Games on Demand.

CELT Talks: Student Engagement (Chad Cardani-Trollinger, Sayali Kukday, & Gabriel Rodriguez)

Research has shown that instructors want to learn from other instructors and CELT Talks is an interactive platform where instructors can do exactly this. A panel of instructors from diverse disciplines will have up to 15 minutes each to share their expertise in forums on specific topics.

Student Engagement is the teaching and learning topic this month. Participants will learn about the student engagement strategies used by Sayali Kukday (Associate Teaching Professor of Genetics, Development & Cell Biology), Chad Cardani-Trollinger (Assistant Teaching Professor in Leadership Studies) and Gabriel Rodriguez (Assistant Professor of School of Education). Participants will leave the Zoom session with the top three tips recommended for building student engagement by each instructor.
