Quality Matters Workshops

QM Workshops

Quality Matters (QM) professional development has two distinct purposes:

  1. Support individuals who seek out information about the QM processes and tools to gain clarity about online and/or blended course design assurance, its impact on student learning and improve their courses. Individuals participate in QM workshops and receive recognition for completing them, but they do not acquire any official QM roles and do not represent QM.
  2. Prepare individuals for official QM roles, such as Peer Reviewer, Master Reviewer, Workshop Facilitator, and QM Coordinator. Certification courses allow those individuals who complete them to hold official QM roles. These are time-intensive and rigorous professional development opportunities, in which individuals are held accountable to high levels of expectations as they represent QM in their assigned roles.

Instructors interested in pursuing may connect with our CELT instructional designers for support or pedagogical consultations by emailing your course title, describing the question or issues you have, and the steps to replicate it to celt-help@iastate.edu. This step will also create a ServiceNow ticket for easy tracking.

As of September 2019, ISU has 2 Peer Reviewers, who are certified to be on the QM-initiated course review teams.

Face-to-Face QM Workshops

The CELT QM coordinator is certified to teach two QM workshops: Applying the QM Rubric (APPQMR), and Improving Your Online Course (IYOC). Both are day-long interactive and collaborative around the QM fundamentals; however, each workshop has a somewhat different approach.

Which one is right for you? See the comparison table below.

Applying the QM Rubric (APPQMR)Improving Your Online Course (IYOC)
Participants apply the QM rubric to a demo courseParticipants apply the QM Rubric to their own courses
Participants use the demo course evidence to evaluate if a demo course meets the QM Course Design StandardsParticipants use the evidence from their own courses to evaluate if their own courses meet the QM Course Design Standards
Upon completion, participants may pursue certification for attaining the QM roles of Peer Reviewer and Master ReviewerUpon completion, participants are knowledgeable about the QM fundamentals, but the workshop is not connected to other certification courses, such as Peer Reviewer and Master Reviewer, as a prerequisite

Would like to host either of the workshops in your department?

If you wish to make these two face-to-face workshops available to your department, so your instructors can learn about intentional online and blended course design, please contact CELT by emailing at celt@iastate.edu or calling 515-294-5357.

Facilitation is free, but your department will be asked to sponsor the workshop materials for your participants.
