Canvas Conferences


The Canvas Conferences tool seamlessly integrates with Canvas, enabling quick setup of virtual office hours and online classroom meetings.

Best practices: Do not share FERPA information, like ISU ID Card numbers or student grades, in a Conference. Use the Canvas gradebook for sharing grade information with your students.


  • Students can attend classes remotely in a virtual classroom or watch lecture recordings when it’s convenient.
  • Teachers can hold virtual office hours wherever and whenever works for their schedule.
  • Teachers can organize students into project groups in seconds.
  • Students can create their own Conferences for collaboration when assigned to a Canvas Group.
  • Up to 100 users in a single Conference.
  • Recorded Conferences are stored for 14 days.

Canvas Conferences is no longer recommended by Iowa State University as BigBlueButton has limited us to no more than 10 concurrent Conferences at a time.

The Conferences tool is a standard part of Canvas and has no separate log in.


The Canvas Conferences tool is supported by Instructure. Use one of the following channels to connect with their 24/7 support:

  • live chat — open the ?Help menu in Canvas and click ‘Chat with Canvas Support’
  • ticket support — open the ?Help menu in Canvas and click ‘Report a Problem
  • phone support — call 515-294-4000, then follow the prompts for Canvas support
