Marcketti will lead teaching center (Inside Iowa State)

Sara MarckettiSara Marcketti has been named director of the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT).

Marcketti, professor of apparel, events and hospitality management (AESHM), has served as CELT associate director since 2013 and interim director since July 2017. Her five-year appointment will extend through June 2023.

“Sara has demonstrated outstanding leadership during her year as interim director, leading CELT through a successful external review, and overseeing the university’s transition from Blackboard to Canvas,” said Dawn Bratsch-Prince, associate provost for faculty. “She is also an accomplished educator in her own right, with a strong focus on the scholarship of teaching and learning, and is a passionate advocate for student success.”

“It has been my honor and pleasure to lead the CELT staff this year,” Marcketti said. “We have much to celebrate and I look forward to working with the CELT staff to ensure our workshops, programs and resources continue to provide the support instructors need along their teaching trajectory.”

A native of New York, Marcketti joined the AESHM faculty in 2005. She holds a bachelor’s degree in art history and a master’s degree in textiles, merchandising and interiors from the University of Georgia, Athens. Marcketti was named a fellow of the Costume Society of America earlier this year, the highest recognition awarded to faculty in her discipline.

Update on Canvas “Go Live” Date at ISU

The ISU Canvas Implementation Team is continuing to make progress on completing the initial implementation of Canvas at ISU. The team met with the Canvas On-Site Implementation consultants on campus July 12-14 and were able to complete a number of steps to make Canvas functional at ISU and integrated with ISU’s local systems. Our goal is to provide a trouble-free first login experience for ISU instructors and staff, and to provide clear steps for creating courses in Canvas using Blackboard migrated course materials.

Based on the work completed and work remaining we have updated our “go live” date for instructor access and anticipate it will be by July 28, 2017.

A fully featured version of Canvas will be ready for developing Spring 2018 courses by mid-semester Fall 2017.

Status updates and additional details will be posted on the ISU Learning Management System (LMS) website. If you have questions please email canvas@iastate.edu.

First ISU Course Certified by Quality Matters

ISU just had our first course certified through Quality Matters: VMPM 378 Case Studies IV: Emerging and Exotic Diseases of Animals/Initial Accreditation Training. CELT is a subscriber to a national non-profit quality assurance program for online and blended learning called Quality Matters (QM)https://www.qualitymatters.org. Quality Matters is a nationally recognized, faculty-centered, peer review process designed to certify the quality of online course design and online components. Instructors can submit their course to QM for review and if it meets their standards the course is awarded a certification.

VMPM 378, the Emerging and Exotic Diseases of Animals (EEDA) web-based course was developed between 2000-2002 by Iowa State University, the University of Georgia, the University of California, Davis and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). It has been used since 2002 at U.S. veterinary schools to raise awareness of foreign, emerging, and exotic animal diseases and the appropriate response if an unusual disease is suspected. The course is currently used at all United States veterinary schools and serves as the Initial Accreditation Training that must be completed as part of the USDA Accreditation process.

Quality Matters promotes a peer review process and provides a database of trained QM Peer Reviewers eligible for assignment to a peer review team. Any subscribing institution may conduct internal or informal reviews or contract with Quality Matters to conduct an official review. Official course reviews may also be conducted by eligible subscribers according to the terms in the appropriate subscription agreement. Courses that meet QM Review Standards are listed in the Quality Matters’ Registry of Courses. Please visit the QM website for more information about QM course reviews. Courses that successfully meet QM Review Standards in an official course review are eligible to carry the QM Certification Mark that is specific to the QM Rubric version used in the course review. The following is an example of a certification mark issued for a course that successfully met standards in an official QM Course Review in 2015.
