Canvas Deploy: Home link, Files Download Link, Missing Label (April 28, 2021)

The April 28, 2021 Canvas Deploy addresses the following features and bug fixes:

  • Course Navigation Home Link: This option allows instructors to add a Course Link to Home anywhere the Rich Content Editor is supported.
  • Files Download Links: Links to email addresses and pages with the word files in the title will no longer improperly display the download link inside the Rich Content Editor.
  • Missing Label and Graded Submissions: When an online submission assignment is not submitted by the due date, the Missing label will now display in SpeedGrader, regardless of whether it has been graded.

The following features are included in this update but not currently applicable to the ISU environment:

  • Save and Build Buttons: The New Quiz creation page includes both a Save button and a Build button.
  • Assignment Enhancements and HTML Tags: When a course has enabled assignment enhancements, HTML tagging code styles added to assignment descriptions are now properly retained in student view.

Canvas Deploy: Gradebook tooltip, delayed announcements, external apps and assignment scores (April 14, 2021)

The April 14, 2021 Canvas Deploy addresses the following features and bug fixes:

  • Gradebook: For students, assignments with a manual post policy now display “Instructor has not posted this grade” in the tooltip when applicable.
  • Delayed Announcements and Safari Browser: Delayed announcements with embedded files which are created in Safari 13.1.2+ now post at the intended time.
  • External Apps (LTI) and Complete/Incomplete Assignments: Canvas code has been updated to align LTI 1.1 tools with all Canvas grades. Canvas assignments calculate a score above 0 as complete, while LTI 1.1 calculates a score of 1 (100%) as complete. This change aligns both percentage options and provides a passback grade of 0.5 as complete.

Additional features included in this update but not currently applicable to the ISU environment include:

  • Participation Date Visibility: Behind-the-scenes code changes in preparation for the April 17 participation menu changes.
  • Concluded Enrollments and Assignment Enhancements: Closed a loophole whereby enabling Assignment Enhancements allowed concluded students to submit assignments
  • File Upload Restrictions and Assignment Enhancements: When Assignment Enhancements had been enabled for a course, and file extension restrictions were enabled for an Online assignment, some accepted text-based file extensions resulted in an error. Canvas code has been updated to improve file loading for supported extensions.

  • Item Bank Management: Item banks for New Quizzes can now be shared across multiple courses in either a view-only or edit permission state.

The LMS Enterprise Team will continue to review these Canvas features as they develop, offering guidance to Instructure to make implementation more feasible at ISU.

The May 26, 2021 Canvas Deploy addresses the following features and bug fixes:

  • Feature Options Search Filter: The Feature Options page includes a search filter.
  • Assignments: The Rich Content Editor is no longer collapsed into a placeholder view when it is not being used by the user on a text-entry submission and entries are saved automatically until the text is submitted to prevent content from being lost. Additionally, when a student enters content for an assignment or a classic quiz using the Pretty HTML View, the content is now properly saved for submission.
  • Discussions: The Discussions toolbar that displays in individual discussions is no longer sticky and remains at the top of the page. The Usage Rights icon button includes a title for screen readers and the links to discussions have visual focus indicators.

  • Direct Share and Multiple User Roles: Instructors cannot access Direct Share options in a course where they are a student.

The following Assignment Enhancement features are included in this update but not currently applicable to the ISU environment:

  • File Upload Interface: When Assignment Enhancements are enabled and an Assignment is configured for File Upload submissions, the File Upload interface now displays as a full-width drag-and-drop menu. When files are added, the files display in a table below the upload field, and progress bars are shown for each individual upload.

Canvas Release: Student Annotation Assignments and Closed Captioning Setting (May 15, 2021)

The changes below will be added to the Canvas environment as part of the May 15, 2021 Canvas Release.
  • Student Annotation Submissions: Instructors may now create an assignment with a submission type of Student Annotation. Instructors upload the file to be annotated and students complete the assignment using the annotation tools within DocViewer.
  • Auto-Show Closed Captioning: Users can enable captions to show by default in all Canvas videos. Captions can be added to a video when uploading a video, or they can be added any time by clicking the video in the Rich Content Editor and accessing the video options sidebar. Note: Videos embedded from third-party tools, such as YouTube, are not supported. Additionally, videos embedded from Canvas Studio videos are not yet supported but will be in a future release.
Additional features included in this update but not currently applicable to the ISU environment include:
  • Course Templates: A Canvas course may now be designated as a course template for all new courses created in an account. This new feature does not currently have the permissions granularity needed to work within the ISU organizational structure and impedes the ability of an instructor to make design decisions in their own course.
  • New Quizzes – Save and Build Buttons: The New Quiz creation page includes both a Save button and a Build button. See CELT’s Update on New Quizzes Implementation for guidance provided by the Change Advisory Board.
The LMS Enterprise Team will continue to review these Canvas features as they develop, offering guidance to Instructure to make implementation more feasible at ISU.
