The scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) goes beyond simply using effective or innovative teaching methods in the classroom, commonly called scholarly teaching. It involves inquiry into teaching, engagement, feedback, and reflection on teaching and learning. It also includes sharing results so others can review, critique and build on the work. The Iowa State University Faculty Handbook on page 57 discusses the distinction between scholarly teaching and the scholarship of teaching and learning. The Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching offers three programs focused on supporting SoTLat Iowa State University. They include:
The Miller Faculty Fellowship Program
The SoTL Institute [More information to come soon!]
CELT also offers opportunities for peer review of teaching and discussion of SoTL topics. Contact CELT for more information.
Teaching Related Journals — Categorized by college, are teaching related journals or disciplinary journals that publish the scholarship of teaching and learning.
