Introduction and Background
In Fall 2007, the Center for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) Advisory Board formed a committee to explore best practices related to student evaluation of teaching (SET). The committee identified the need to offer a set of guidelines for effective student evaluation of teaching. The materials here are a synthesis of guidelines identified through a review of the literature. We categorized these guidelines into four areas: use of SET, instruments, administration, and analysis/reporting.
We encourage readers to review these materials in order to promote the effective use of SET. We hope that these guidelines, combined with suggested questions, and resources will offer useful strategies to enhance teaching and learning. To assist review and in-depth understanding of the literature, we include links to the information sources used to develop the guidelines.
