CTE Newsletter - Nov/Dec 2003 (Vol 16, No 2)

Briefly Noted...

  • Are you thinking of applying for a Miller Grant for 2004-05? Any faculty member at Iowa State University (tenured, tenure-track, adjunct, lecturer or clinician) may apply for a fellowship of $1,000 to $25,000 to develop new approaches to the teaching of existing undergraduate courses or to develop entirely new courses that will enhance the learning of undergraduates at the university. Up to $250,000 is available. Check out the guidelines and deadlines for application.

  • "Make a Virtual Classroom Visit with help from the CTE and ITC!"
  • Although many faculty members would like to visit others' classrooms to learn about innovations and effective techniques, time and distance often make such visits very difficult. The CTE and the Instructional Technology Center therefore invite you to make a virtual visit to a different classroom. The first of several such visits is Associate Professor Jim Colbert's Biology 202 class in which Jim uses small-group activity as a way to improve students' understanding of class materials. Real Player is needed to view this video clip; it can be downloaded without charge here. More of these opportunities to peer into the windows of other instructors' classes will be made available next semester through the weekly e-newsletter, the CTE News and Tips. To subscribe, contact Pamela Milloy.

  • Grant Writers' Workshop (GWW) will be offered again in 2004 to assist faculty in their grant-writing efforts. The GWW is jointly sponsored by the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Programs and the Vice Provost for Research. Orientation sessions begin in April and the program concludes in fall 2004. Participants will receive extensive training, feedback, and critiques of funding proposals. For more information and application materials, please contact Pamela Milloy, 294-4512
